James Cole
Professor of Neuroimage Computing, Department of Computer Science, University College London
Professional profileProf. James H. Cole is a Professor of Neuroimage Computing in the Department of Computer Science at University College London (UCL). He is based jointly at the Hawkes Institute and the Dementia Research Centre (DRC), where he has worked since 2019. He is the Principal Investigator of the MANIFOLD Lab, which focuses on applying machine learning and AI to neuroimaging data to understand ageing and neurodegenerative diseases.
Professor Cole's research uses neuroimaging to explore the relationship between ageing and brain diseases, particularly dementia. His work applies machine learning techniques to neuroimaging data and integrates it with other biological data sources, such as genetics, epigenetics, and fluid biomarkers. He has studied multiple conditions, including major depressive disorder, Huntington's disease, Alzheimer's disease, traumatic brain injury, HIV, Down syndrome, Prader-Willi syndrome, and multiple sclerosis. He has also employed multiple neuroimaging modalities in longitudinal studies to better understand trajectories of brain health in these diseases and improve health outcomes for individual patients.
His research also focuses on translating neuroimaging into clinical practice. He collaborates with researchers, clinicians, and industrial partners to integrate quantitative neuroimaging analysis into clinical protocols for diagnosis, treatment, and long-term care planning, aiming to improve outcomes for people with neurological or psychiatric diseases.
