Professional profile

Prof. Stefan Thurner is a Professor of Science of Complex Systems at the Medical University of Vienna and the President of the Complexity Science Hub Vienna (CSH), an independent research institute dedicated to the study of complex systems. He has published over 290 scientific articles spanning fundamental physics (topological excitations in quantum field theories, statistics and entropy of complex systems), applied mathematics (wavelet statistics, fractal harmonic analysis, anomalous diffusion), network theory, and evolutionary systems.

His research also extends to life sciences (network medicine, gene regulatory networks, bioinformatics, heartbeat dynamics, cell motility), economics and finance (price formation, regulation, systemic risk), and social sciences (opinion formation, bureaucratic inefficiency, collective human behaviour, efficiency of healthcare systems). He holds three patents.

In addition to his role at CSH, Prof. Thurner is a Professor of Science of Complex Systems at the Medical University of Vienna, where he chairs the Section for Science of Complex Systems. He has been an External Professor at the Santa Fe Institute since 2007 and a Guest Professor at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore since 2016.
