Five HUN-REN Projects Awarded Funding under the Mission-Driven National Laboratories Programme
From antimicrobial resistance and precision medicine to hydrogen technology and artificial intelligence, HUN-REN research institutes will now launch new initiatives in several strategically important areas of research. Five HUN-REN projects have been awarded a total of HUF 7.05 billion under the National Research, Development and Innovation Office (NRDI Office) call supporting the further development of Mission-Driven National Laboratories.
The programme aims to build on the achievements of projects implemented under the previous National Laboratories Programme and Thematic Excellence Programme by fostering research and innovation collaborations that seek solutions to major societal, economic and environmental challenges. The initiative also supports the establishment and development of knowledge centres with the potential to become leading national scientific hubs in their respective fields.
A total of 30 funding applications were submitted under the call, requesting more than HUF 76.5 billion in funding. Of these, 14 projects were awarded a total of HUF 20.92 billion in funding from the National Research, Development and Innovation Fund.
Five HUN-REN projects are among the successful applicants. The HUN-REN Biological Research Centre, Szeged secured funding for two programmes: the Mission-Driven National Laboratory for Antimicrobial Resistance and Microbial Health will receive HUF 1 billion, while the Mission-Driven National Laboratory for a Single-Cell Multi-Omics Atlas and Research Platform for Precision Medicine will receive HUF 1.5 billion.
The HUN-REN Centre for Energy Research has been awarded HUF 1.25 billion for its LOHC Mission-Driven National Laboratory.
The HUN-REN Institute for Computer Science and Control also has two successful projects. The Mission-Driven National Laboratory for Cooperative and Robust Autonomous Mobile Systems has been awarded HUF 2 billion, while the Mission-Driven National Laboratory for Agent-Based Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare and Manufacturing will receive HUF 1.3 billion.
Mission-Driven National Laboratories provide collaborative environments for discovery and experimental research, bringing together Hungary's leading research capacities while placing particular emphasis on the societal and economic utilisation of scientific results.
The projects are implemented with the support of the Ministry of Science and Technology, with the involvement of the National Research, Development and Innovation Office, and financed by the National Research, Development and Innovation Fund.
