“Hungarian Science Is Heading to the Top Tier”

25.03.2026

Owing to advances in the natural sciences, the 21st century stands on the cusp of a new era—once unimaginable and confined to the realm of science fiction—marked by rapid progress in artificial intelligence, space exploration, quantum technologies and the life sciences, said Balázs Gulyás, President of the HUN-REN Hungarian Research Network, in an interview published in the 25 March edition of Magyar Nemzet, a Hungarian daily newspaper.

The Széchenyi Prize-winning neurobiologist and university professor, who is also affiliated with the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm—home to the Nobel Assembly responsible for awarding the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine—added that scientific research today is no longer the predominantly individual, almost romantic pursuit that characterised the work of outstanding scientists in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Instead, it is increasingly shaped by international collaboration, both within disciplines and through growing cooperation between institutions. For a country the size of Hungary, this presents a distinct set of challenges, but also considerable opportunities.

The interview also addresses the benefits of HUN-REN’s renewed structure and mode of operation, the strategic objectives of the research network, the role of artificial intelligence, the adoption of international best practice, and the encouragement of researcher mobility and innovation. It further explores the reasons behind Balázs Gulyás’s decision to move from a research career into the leadership of HUN-REN.
