Philip W. Y. Chiu

Professor Chiu pioneers AI-driven robotic surgery, developing automated systems and intelligent platforms for endoscopic detection.

Professional profile

Professor Philip Chiu is the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and a visionary leader in robotic surgery. At the forefront of Artificial Intelligence in healthcare, Prof. Chiu directs the Multi-Scale Medical Robotics Center (MRC). Under his leadership, the center has developed a groundbreaking AI-powered surgical automation system, which successfully completed the world’s first multi-task automation tests on live subjects. This research explores AI's potential to act as a "co-pilot" during complex surgeries, using intelligent algorithms to assist surgeons with real-time navigation and decision-making.

Beyond automation, Prof. Chiu utilizes AI to enhance diagnostic accuracy and surgical training. His team has validated AI platforms that significantly improve the endoscopic detection of early-stage gastrointestinal cancers.

With nearly 400 peer-reviewed publications and numerous international honors, including Endoscopy's Most Innovative Paper Award, Gold Medals with Congratulations of the Jury at the International Exhibitions of Inventions of Geneva, Honorary Membership of the European Association of Endoscopic Surgery and Foreign Membership of the Academia Europaea, his work is redefining the future of surgery through the synergy of flexible robotics, nanotechnology, and machine intelligence.
