Yanan Sui

Associate Professor Yanan Sui develops safe reinforcement learning and embodied AI for clinical neuromodulation and robotic rehabilitation.

Professional profile

As an Associate Professor at the National Engineering Laboratory of Neuromodulation, School of Aerospace Engineering, at Tsinghua University, Yanan Sui specializes in machine learning, neural engineering, and robotics.

He is currently exploring how artificial intelligence can be applied in areas such as clinical therapies and robotic control. His work also looks at optimization and reinforcement learning, especially when safety constraints, user preferences, and structured decision spaces come into play. Alongside this, he is involved in research on neuromodulation for neurological disorders within neural engineering, the development of robotic rehabilitation systems for patients with movement disorders, and the broader field of AI‑assisted healthcare.

He regularly serves on the organizing and program committees of leading AI conferences, taking on roles such as senior area chair and area chair. His work has earned wide recognition, including honors from MIT Technology Review’s Innovators Under 35 (China) and the AI 100 Young Pioneer Award. His research on safe optimization has been included in textbooks at Stanford and other universities, and he has co‑received best paper awards at major robotics conferences and workshops. Beyond academia, his work has been successfully applied in the clinical treatment of neural injuries in both China and the United States.
