Tasks of the Institute for General and Hungarian Linguistics: conducting linguistic theory and general linguistic research; research in the fields of phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics; research in the field of general and Hungarian phonetics; development of speech databases; a description of the language systems of today's Hungarian language and other languages; basic research in psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics and cognitive science; methodological developments supporting language acquisition, mother tongue development and rehabilitation; the maintenance of the ELTE BTK‒NYTK Centre for Outsourced Theoretical Linguistics together with the Faculty of Arts at Eötvös Loránd University, whose task is to operate the BA, MA and doctoral courses in theoretical linguistics at Eötvös Loránd University.
Tasks of the Institute for Lexicology: Preparation of the Comprehensive Dictionary of Hungarian (A magyar nyelv nagyszótára); maintenance of the database of the New Hungarian Etymological Dictionary (Új magyar etimológiai szótár); research in the field of lexicography; conducting lexicological research on current and historical Hungarian vocabulary.
Tasks of the Institute for Language Technologies and Applied Linguistics: to carry out language technology research and development, to build and maintain language resources and language technology infrastructures; design and compilation of electronic text databases for corpus linguistic research; today's language problems and language and research on name use issues, language counseling, language dissemination and science communication; theoretical and practical research on the use of language, sociopragmatics; theoretical and practical research of Hungarian and other minority languages.
Tasks of the Institute for Historical and Uralic Linguistics: general examination of linguistic historical issues, as well as research of theoretical models of linguistic history and linguistic changes; basic research in historical comparison, language typology and language history and uralistic research; documentation of endangered Uralic languages, research into the history of the Hungarian language and other languages; exploring the issues of Hungarian language history; processing and publication of language monuments; building databases.
