The HUN-REN Institute of Earth Physics and Space Science (HUN-REN EPSS), based in Sopron, is Hungary's dedicated centre for fundamental research in geodesy, geophysics, and space science.

HUN-REN EPSS 's principal focus is the observation, modelling, and interpretation of the physical state and processes of the Earth system — from its deep interior to its cosmic environment — alongside the development of the theoretical and practical methods and instruments that this work requires. Research spans a broad and interconnected range of disciplines, including geodynamics, geomagnetism, seismology, atmospheric physics, space plasma physics, lithosphere physics, and the study of Sun–Earth relations.

HUN-REN EPSS  is entrusted with national responsibility for the maintenance and operation of the Hungarian National Seismological Network, a 15-station real-time monitoring system that collects and processes data on seismic activity across Hungary and its immediate surroundings and routinely forwards arrival-time readings to international seismological centres.

HUN-REN EPSS's research infrastructure reflects the full breadth of its scientific remit, comprising nine facilities distributed across Hungary. A particularly notable recent addition is the Zero Magnetic Field Laboratory, capable of simulating the magnetic conditions of interplanetary space. Together, these facilities provide a robust platform for long-term monitoring, specialised measurement, high-quality data generation, and participation in internationally significant research initiatives.

In 2024,  37 researchers working at HUN-REN EPSS  produced 67 publications, of which 44 appeared in impact-factor-indexed journals, with a cumulative impact factor of 149.5 and a total of 1,543 citations. HUN-REN EPSS  is active in European and international scientific networks, including EPOS-related data provision and ESA-linked activities, and participates in broader Framework Programme collaboration as well as industry partnerships. HUN-REN EPSS  hosts one of the prestigious Research Grant Hungary fellowships, under which Professor Sierd Cloetingh serves as the institute’s Scientific Advisor.
