16th GPU Day: AI, HPC, Massively Parallel and Quantum Computing Under One Roof

04.06.2026

The HUN-REN Wigner Scientific Computing Laboratory (WSCLAB) once again hosted its flagship conference, showcasing the latest advances in high-performance, massively parallel classical and quantum computing.

On 28–29 May 2026, the HUN-REN Wigner Scientific Computing Laboratory (WSCLAB) held the 16th edition of GPU Day at the HUN-REN Headquarters in Budapest. More than 80 participants attended the hybrid event in person, while the live online broadcast attracted additional viewers from across the scientific community.

Over the course of the two-day programme, speakers demonstrated how artificial intelligence is being applied in physics and how large-scale, computationally intensive challenges in particle physics, nuclear physics, and medical imaging can be addressed using highly scalable GPU and HPC architectures. Particular attention was given to the integration of quantum technologies with classical computing, as well as to ongoing research initiatives involving CERN, ELI, and the European AI Factory Antenna project. The conference also provided a valuable forum for collaboration between academia and industry, with NTT DATA, Stream HPC, and Lombiq Ltd. among the event’s sponsors.

“One of the cornerstones of the HUN-REN Hungarian Research Network’s AI strategy is to ensure that Hungarian researchers have practical access to state-of-the-art AI infrastructure and computing resources — not merely in theory, but in practice. International partnerships are opening up new opportunities in this area, including the emerging AI Factory Antenna initiative and our collaboration with the Jülich Supercomputing Centre,” said Roland Jakab, Chief Executive Officer of HUN-REN, in his opening keynote address.

WSCLAB was established in 2021 through the merger of the former Wigner GPU Laboratory, the Wigner Analysis Facility, and the ALICE/CMS WLCG Tier-2 GRID laboratories. It is recognised by the National Research, Development and Innovation Office (NRDI Office) as one of Hungary’s TOP50 national research infrastructures of excellence.

Further information about the event is available at the GPU Day website. Recordings of the presentations will soon be published on the laboratory group’s YouTube channel.
