HUN-REN’s renewal reaches another milestone

HUN-REN Governing Board holds inaugural meeting

25.11.2025

Following HUN-REN’s registration by the Budapest-Capital Regional Court in late October 2025, and with the network now operating under its new organisational form, its highest strategic governing body – the seven-member Governing Board, comprising leaders from science and business – and the three-member Supervisory Board overseeing the network’s operations held their inaugural meeting at a formal ceremony on 24 November 2025. Prior to the meeting, Balázs Hankó, Minister for Culture and Innovation, welcomed the members of the Governing Board and the Supervisory Board, emphasising that the excellence represented by researchers and corporate leaders on the Governing Board is a guarantee that Hungarian science and research will advance.

HUN-REN bears an exceptional responsibility – one that will shape the future of Hungarian research and science – in serving the development of the country’s scientific community. The Governing Board – in which three delegates of the directors general of the research institutions and HUN-REN’s CEO also participate in a consultative capacity – is the network’s highest governing body; under the HUN-REN Act it exercises the founder’s rights and is responsible for strategic decisions concerning the organisation. The mission of the HUN-REN Hungarian Research Network – comprising the national research institutes and research centres – is to contribute, through scientific research and innovation activities, to the creation of new scientific and innovation outcomes; to preserving and fostering national culture; and to enriching global science and culture. In doing so, it helps address social, economic and environmental challenges facing the Hungarian nation as a whole. With HUN-REN’s renewal, a paradigm shift has taken place in Hungary’s scientific life; the establishment of the Governing Board is a milestone in this process, marking a new era for the flagship of Hungary’s research and innovation ecosystem, emphasised Balázs Gulyás, President of HUN-REN.

‘The HUN-REN Hungarian Research Network has been entrusted by law with a noble mission of exceptional responsibility, advancing science and serving the nation’s future. The goal is clear: to strengthen our scientific and economic competitiveness, improve our integration into international value chains and drive growth in scientific impact and value creation. Under the HUN-REN Act, the Governing Board has been given special responsibility for delivering this. At the same time, we are developing an operating model in which researchers can work with a lighter administrative burden and greater professional freedom. Digitalisation, faster decision-making and unified resource planning will make HUN-REN’s operations more flexible and predictable. Delegates from the leadership of the research institutions are also participating in the process concerning HUN-REN’s future, and we will continue to rely on Roland Jakab, CEO of HUN-REN, in this work,’ said Balázs Gulyás, President of HUN-REN.

In 2024, the Hungarian Parliament adopted Act XCI of 2024 on the HUN-REN Hungarian Research Network. On 27 October 2025, the Budapest-Capital Regional Court registered the HUN-REN Hungarian Research Network, operating as a legal entity with a special legal status. In addition to its public task in research, it will also carry out related market activities. Bringing together the national research institutes and research centres, the network has a public task that includes, among other things: conducting scientific research through its research institutions; maintaining, operating and developing the infrastructure required for this purpose; promoting the application of research results; strengthening relations with foreign and international scientific institutions and organisations, and with the European Union’s scientific organisations; participating in doctoral (PhD) training in higher education; ensuring the operation of the research talent pipeline; providing expert opinions on strategic questions concerning science and society in Hungary; and offering public-interest services related to its research activities.
