International Scientific Advisory Board Established at HUN-REN
Budapest, 27 February 2026 – With the participation of thirteen globally renowned scientists, each representing international scientific excellence in their respective fields, the International Scientific Advisory Board (ISAB) of the HUN-REN Hungarian Research Network has been formally established. The members of the Board were invited by Balázs Gulyás, President of HUN-REN, and their appointments were approved by the HUN-REN Governing Board (GB) at its meeting on 25 February. The appointment of these internationally recognised scientists marks an important opportunity for HUN-REN. Drawing on their extensive experience, they will enhance the organisation’s global partnerships, visibility and competitiveness. Working closely with the Governing Board and its President, they will also play a key role in shaping HUN-REN’s strategic direction.
The thirteen-member Board brings together globally recognised representatives of the international scientific community, representing three continents and ten scientific disciplines. Members include, among others, László Lovász, former President of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Irene Tracey, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Oxford, Alexander Zehnder, former President of the Swiss ETH Domain, Jana Kolar, former Executive Director of CERIC-ERIC, Antoine Petit CEO and Chairman of CNRS, Lam Khin Yong, Vice President (Industry) at Nanyang Technological University and Sir Philip Campbell, former Editor-in-Chief of Nature.
„The establishment of the International Scientific Advisory Board marks a significant step in reinforcing HUN-REN’s international scientific foundations and expanding its global partnerships. Through their accomplishments, professional experience, international networks and standing in the global scientific community, the Board’s members foster cross-border research collaborations and help strengthen HUN-REN’s international profile,” said Balázs Gulyás, President of HUN-REN and Chair of the Governing Board.
“Beyond their scientific excellence, ISAB members bring strong ties to the research and industrial innovation ecosystems. By drawing on this combined expertise, HUN-REN is better positioned to develop and implement a sustainable, future-oriented research strategy grounded in excellence, innovation and societal impact,” added Roland Jakab, Chief Executive Officer of HUN-REN.
The ISAB contributes actively to HUN-REN’s ongoing development and modernisation, providing strategic guidance and professional advice to the Governing Board. Several Board members have previously supported HUN-REN in the role of international scientific advisers.
