ICOS Consortium Holds General Assembly in Hungary

10.11.2024

The Integrated Carbon Observation System (ICOS) held its general assembly in Hungary in early November. A key focus of the meeting was to discuss plans for expanding ICOS's activities. Participants also visited HUN-REN’s Institute for Nuclear Research (ATOMKI) – the host of the event - in Debrecen to learn about its climate research efforts.

The ICOS European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC) was established by the European Union to develop the bloc’s climate protection strategy, monitor its implementation, and track the effectiveness of climate policy measures. The atmospheric, ecological, and oceanic measurement stations monitoring greenhouse gases - key players in climate change - are scattered across the member countries of the consortium, covering much of Europe.

Hungary joined the consortium in 2022, which now includes 16 countries. HUN-REN ATOMKI coordinates ICOS's activities in Hungary and operates the tall-tower greenhouse gas observation station in Hegyhátsál.

ICOS aims to expand its current operations in several ways to provide deeper insights into the natural and human sources, sinks, and atmospheric cycles of greenhouse gases through its measurement data.

More details about the event can be found on the ATOMKI website.
