HUN-REN Centre for Agricultural Research Supports Young Talent from Secondary School

15.01.2025

The HUN-REN Centre for Agricultural Research (HUN-REN CAR) aims to support future researchers from their secondary school years. To this end, they have signed a collaboration agreement with one of Hungary’s top 10 rural grammar schools.

A collaboration agreement has been signed between the Vörösmarty Mihály Secondary School of Érd (VMG) and HUN-REN CAR. VMG Érd is ranked 31st on HVG's list of secondary schools in Hungary and 8th among the top 10 non-metropolitan schools.

The document was signed late last year by Zoltán Divéki, Deputy Director-General of HUN-REN CAR, and Judit Szilasné Mészáros, Headteacher of VMG. The aim of the cooperation is to provide talented students with research mentoring, offering them an insight into the world of scientific research while introducing them to various fields of agricultural science, including plant protection, soil science, and sustainable agriculture.

On the occasion of the agreement signing, the Deputy Director-General of HUN-REN CAR gave a presentation at the VMG Science Workshop, attended by nearly one hundred students. Zoltán Divéki outlined the activities of HUN-REN CAR, ongoing research, and the steps involved in becoming a researcher.

Norbert Németh, Head of the Department of Operative Techniques and Surgical Research at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Debrecen and Vice-Dean for Educational Affairs, and András Falus, Széchenyi Prize-winning immunologist and former Director of the Department of Genetics, Cell and Immunobiology at Semmelweis University, Budapest, also delivered a lecture.

The long-term aim of the collaboration is to promote research careers and advance the development of agricultural science in Hungary.

HUN-REN aims to become one of the most effective research organisations in Europe and to contribute significantly to Hungary's social and economic success. The HUN-REN Act, effective from 1 January 2025, provides the necessary framework for HUN-REN to transform into a more responsive, collaborative, performance-oriented, and well-functioning network, ensuring the freedom of scientific research and the continuation of exploratory research, while providing multidisciplinary solutions to complex challenges affecting both national and international communities. Employees within the modernising HUN-REN can look forward to a long-term, consistent, value-driven, and performance-focused funding system, mutually reinforcing structure and operation, competitive salaries, and a predictable research career.
