The new composition of the ERC Scientific Council has been announced in Brussels. András Stipsicz, Director of the HUN-REN Alfréd Rényi Institute of Mathematics, will represent the field of mathematics in 2025.

András Stipsicz

he twenty-two-member body, composed of leading European researchers, is responsible for coordinating and overseeing the European Research Council's (ERC) independent, large-scale international grant scheme. Professor László Lovász, the only Hungarian researcher to have previously represented the field of mathematics on this esteemed team, will be succeeded next year by András Stipsicz, Director of the HUN-REN Alfréd Rényi Institute of Mathematics and Principal Investigator of two ERC-funded projects.

The Council’s responsibilities include reviewing and occasionally revising grant application procedures to ensure the system remains responsive to the rapidly evolving challenges of science. The election of another Hungarian mathematician to this prestigious body highlights the international recognition of Hungarian science and mathematics.

The European Research Council (ERC) was established in 2007 by the European Commission to provide financial support for scientific and technological research within the EU. As the largest research funding body in the EU, the ERC invites applications from research institutions across all member states and disciplines. ERC grants are awarded to researchers whose proposals demonstrate exceptional quality and innovation, earning the distinction of excellence.
