On Hungarian Scientist' Day at the Osaka World Expo, Balázs Gulyás, President of the HUN-REN Hungarian Research Network, delivered a lecture on the organisation and its strategic role in advancing science and innovation in Hungary.

Held on 30 June, the event was jointly organised by the Ministry of Culture and Innovation and the Hungarian Embassy in Tokyo. Its aim was to highlight the intellectual heritage and creative spirit that have propelled Hungary to the forefront of international scientific life.

The programme at the Hungarian Pavilion began with a video welcome speech by László Bódis, Deputy State Secretary for Innovation. This was followed by a lecture from Nobel Prize-winning physicist Professor Ferenc Krausz, who spoke about the ways in which fundamental scientific research responds to major global challenges.

In his lecture, President Balázs Gulyás spoke about the strategic role of HUN-REN in advancing science and innovation in Hungary, emphasising the organisation’s aim of covering the entire innovation chain — from basic research to industrial application. He noted that HUNRENTECH plays a vital role in the innovation ecosystem, acting as a major catalyst for technology transfer, start-up support and industrial collaboration.

The President of HUN-REN also highlighted the network’s international partnerships and recalled the highly successful AI Symposium held in May. He went on to mention the upcoming Healthy Living Symposium in September, which will once again bring world-renowned researchers to Hungary.

Following Balázs Gulyás, Péter Domokos, President of the Research Council of Hungary, gave a presentation on quantum technology research in Hungary. He discussed the current state of cold atom experiments in the field of cavity quantum electrodynamics, with particular emphasis on strong atom–light coupling and the time-resolved observation of collective quantum phase transitions.
