HUN-REN’s transformation receives international recognition
As a member of Science20 (S20), the advisory body to the G20 that brings together the world’s twenty largest economies, Academia Europaea has formally expressed its support for the reform of the HUN-REN Hungarian Research Network.
On 25 June 2025, a delegation from Academia Europaea visited the HUN-REN HQ for the second time to continue monitoring the ongoing renewal of HUN-REN. Professor Donald B. Dingwell, Acting President of Academia Europaea, and Dr David Coates, its Executive Secretary, met with President Balázs Gulyás and CEO Roland Jakab to discuss the current steps in the transformation process. On this occasion, the delegation was updated on the ongoing transfer of HUN-REN’s research units in the humanities and social sciences to Eötvös Loránd University, including the background and details of the process.
During the meeting, the Academia Europaea delegation informed the HUN-REN leadership that at its session on 11 June 2025, the Board of Trustees of Academia Europaea adopted a statement in support of HUN-REN’s transformation. In this statement, the prestigious organisation emphasised the following:
🔹 HUN-REN has the potential to become one of Europe’s leading research networks, provided it maintains scientific excellence and autonomy.
🔹 The development of career paths that foster the advancement of young researchers is of particular importance.
🔹 The objective of the reforms is to build a Hungarian network capable of operating at the level of institutions such as the Max Planck Society or the French CNRS.
