HUN-REN's New Headquarters: A Symbol of Excellence, Collaboration, and Innovation

14.03.2025

On 14 March, the Hungarian Research Network (HUN-REN) inaugurated its new headquarters in a ceremony that marked not just the opening of a building but the establishment of a symbol of scientific excellence, collaboration, and commitment to innovation. Located at 29 Alkotmány utca, this new centre will serve as a hub for the national and international research community, bringing together world-renowned experts, pioneering research, economic stakeholders, and decision-makers.

At the inauguration ceremony, Tamás Sulyok, President of the Republic of Hungary, formally handed over the symbolic key of the building to the President of HUN-REN. He emphasised that this new centre for the research community is a cornerstone in the development of Hungary’s scientific and innovation ecosystem.

"The impact of science on society is undeniable, and we have a responsibility to foster collective thinking. The HUN-REN headquarters will serve as a meeting point for international conferences, symposia, and exhibitions, contributing to the advancement of the scientific community and the strengthening of international relations. To shape the future of science and technology together, we are working hard to provide stable and attractive career opportunities for both young and experienced researchers," said Balázs Gulyás, President of HUN-REN.

Roland Jakab, CEO of HUN-REN, believes that the new headquarters is not merely an administrative centre but an inspiring space that bridges the gap between science, business, and international partnerships. In doing so, it enhances Hungary’s competitiveness, fosters collaboration, and supports the creation of innovative technologies. The office building has now been revitalised to fulfil its mission as a centre for science and innovation while preserving the legacy of the past for future generations.

With over 3,600 square metres of office space, the building will provide the research ecosystem with state-of-the-art infrastructure and collaborative spaces.

The building also has a unique history: it was designed by Alfréd Hajós, celebrated not only as Hungary’s first Olympic champion but also as a distinguished architect. It was the first office building in Budapest and served for many years as the headquarters of the Hungarian Farmers' Cooperative.

HUN-REN aims to become one of the most effective research organisations in Europe and to contribute significantly to Hungary's social and economic success. The HUN-REN Act, effective from 1 January 2025, provides the necessary framework for HUN-REN to transform into a more responsive, collaborative, performance-oriented, and well-functioning network, ensuring the freedom of scientific research and the continuation of exploratory research, while providing multidisciplinary solutions to complex challenges affecting both national and international communities. Employees within the modernising HUN-REN can look forward to a long-term, consistent, value-driven, and performance-focused funding system, mutually reinforcing structure and operation, competitive salaries, and a predictable research career.
