Strengthening Global Science: HUN-REN and CUHK Launch New Five-Year Partnership
On 19 November 2025, HUN-REN Hungarian Research Network and The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) have signed a five-year Memorandum of Understanding in Hong Kong, formalised by Professor Dennis Lo, Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK, and Professor Balázs Gulyás, President of HUN-REN. The agreement marks the beginning of a new partnership aimed at expanding scientific cooperation and building a strong foundation for collaboration between the two institutions.

CUHK is recognised as one of Asia’s leading research universities, ranked 7th in Asia and 32nd globally in the QS University Rankings 2026. With major strengths in life sciences, medicine, engineering and interdisciplinary research, CUHK has established a robust reputation for both fundamental excellence and impactful translational outcomes.

The MoU provides a framework to advance collaborative research, researcher mobility, co-authored publications, and the exploration of a joint seed-grant scheme supporting early-stage scientific collaboration. During the discussions, Professor Mai Har Sham, Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President of CUHK, shared substantial and forward-looking perspectives on potential areas of cooperation and highlighted the clear alignment between CUHK’s research capabilities and HUN-REN’s long-term scientific priorities.
Earlier in the week, the HUN-REN Presidential Delegation visited the CUHK Shenzhen Research Institute (SZRI), where they were greeted by Professor Yeung Yam, Director of SZRI, and gained a deeper understanding of CUHK’s multi-leg innovation ecosystem spanning Hong Kong and Shenzhen. The visit provided valuable insight into CUHK’s cross-border model that integrates academic research, applied science, industry collaboration, and technology transfer.
This first MoU lays a strong foundation for a long-term, mutually beneficial partnership aimed at accelerating scientific discovery, strengthening researcher exchange, and deepening cooperation between Hungary and the Greater Bay Area.
