Balázs Gulyás receives prestigious 2023 Semmelweis Budapest Award in recognition of his outstanding scientific work

In recognition of his outstanding scientific work, Balázs Gulyás, the President of HUN-REN, was honoured with the Semmelweis Budapest Award, considered Semmelweis University's (SU) most prestigious accolade. Balázs Gulyás' pioneering work in the development of molecular imaging methods has made significant advancements in the field of medicine. With 42 years of international experience in research, innovation, and research management, as a medical doctor and neurobiologist, he has achieved remarkable results in the neurobiological study of the human brain. The prestigious award was presented during a ceremonial scientific event held on 23 November at the Semmelweis Salon in the rectoral building of SU, as part of the Dies Academicus and the Hungarian Science Festival event series.

In his laudatory speech, Dr. Béla Merkely, the Rector of Semmelweis University, characterised Professor Balázs Gulyás as a true Renaissance person who confidently navigates between various fields of knowledge. He emphasised that for Professor Gulyás the acquisition and profound cultivation of the subjects in medicine, physics, theology, philosophy, and biochemistry are self-evident and natural. In the Rector’s view, this unwavering and tireless work, this inexhaustible intellectual drive is what propels science and all of humanity forward. He highlighted that, in addition to being an excellent practitioner of science, Professor Gulyás is also an ambassador for Semmelweis University, establishing a vibrant and lively connection between the university and the world's most esteemed scientific institutions.

During his expression of gratitude, Balázs Gulyás expressed his deep appreciation for Semmelweis University's recognition, viewing it as an immensely significant honour due to his strong connection with the institution as his alma mater. He further noted that he had spent a year at the university working as a clinical nurse even before commencing his formal university studies. This experience gave him a comprehensive understanding of university life, from its fundamental aspects to its most advanced levels. He presented this as an inspiring example for today’s young medical students, believing that it could be highly beneficial for their development.

Next, he delivered a scientific presentation on one of the key areas titled "Maintenance of High Cognitive Performance During Ageing." In this presentation, he summarised some significant studies related to the changes in brain functions that occur with aging, aiming to discover potential approaches for extending the span of healthy years in individuals' lives. He emphasised that based on previous research, a proper diet, cognitive and physical training, spiritual enrichment, and a rich social environment all contribute to maintaining high cognitive performance in old age.

Semmelweis University, the leading medical and healthcare higher education institution in Hungary and the Central European region, established the Semmelweis Budapest Award in 2009. This accolade is the university's most prestigious international scientific recognition.
