HUN-REN Researchers Shine at This Year’s Bolyai Day: Award Recipients Announced

News

In 2024, 160 researchers were awarded the János Bolyai Research Scholarship by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (HAS), recognising the most outstanding young researchers. The winners received their certificates at the traditional Bolyai Day ceremony held at Pesti Vigadó. A total of 46 researchers from the HUN-REN network were awarded Bolyai Scholarships this year, with five receiving the highest honour—the Bolyai Plaque—and 18 receiving the Bolyai Certificate of Merit.

"There is no equality in science. Effective scholarships are designed to select the elite," said Academician Tivadar Tulassay, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the János Bolyai Research Scholarship, at this year's Bolyai Day.

At the initiative of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (HAS), the János Bolyai Research Scholarship was established in 1997 by the Government of Hungary to support and encourage young, talented researchers in achieving excellence in research and development. The scholarship is awarded annually by the Board of Trustees, established by the President of HAS, based on rankings compiled by preparatory committees and the number of available fellowships. Funding is provided for one, two, or three years, with the current amount set at HUF 250,000 per month.

Applicants:

In 2024, 39.4% of all applicants were women, compared to 35% of the awardees. A total of 129 former recipients reapplied for the scholarship, with 23 receiving funding for a second time.

In 2001, the Board of Trustees of the János Bolyai Research Scholarship decided to award the Bolyai Certificate of Merit to scholars who received outstanding ratings for their final research reports. The best among them are honoured with the HAS Bolyai Plaque. Researchers from HUN-REN institutes are also among this year's recipients of the prestigious accolade.

This year's Bolyai Plaque recipients from the HUN-REN network:

Dávid Bajusz (HUN-REN Research Centre for Natural Sciences), Márton Bene (HUN-REN Centre for Social Sciences), Péter Bozó (HUN-REN Research Centre for the Humanities), Zsófia Gaál (HUN-REN Research Centre for Natural Sciences), Barna Páll-Gergely (HUN-REN Centre for Agricultural Research)
